|With an over 20-year career in the field of education, social service and disabilities, Dr. Teresa Garate is the CEO and President of Neumann Family Services (NFS). Prior to assuming that post, Dr. Garate served as a State Officer under Governor Quinn’s administration in the role of Assistant Director at the Illinois Department of Public Health. She was recently appointed to the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) to bring her expertise in higher education and perspectives for promoting educational access to high need populations, e.g. people with disabilities, Latino’s and non-traditional students.Dr. Garate is the current chair of Governor Quinn’s Anti-Violence Commission and serves on the Board of the Illinois Violence Prevention Authority. Additionally, Dr. Garate is an Adjunct Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Disability and Human Development at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Over the years she has conducted extensive work within the City Colleges of Chicago system bringing in federal grant resources to support the development of and enhance disability services opportunities.Dr. Garate is a former senior level administrator in the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) where she served as the Chief of Staff for the Office of Specialized Services. Prior to CPS, she served as the Center Director of the Department of Disability and Human Development at the University of Illinois at Chicago.Dr. Garate has a long history of service and leadership to community organizations, city and state agencies and is a well-respected advocate for disability rights, education and public health. Dr. Garate holds a B.S. in Applied Psychology, a B.S.Ed. in Special Education, a Master’s Degree in Special Education and a Ph.D. in Special Education.
