SCC Holds First Ever CTE Day for Local High School Students

ULLIN, IL. (April 6, 2016) – The Career and Technical Education Department at Shawnee Community College hosted the institution’s first ever Career and Technical Education (CTE) Day on Friday, March 18th, 2016. The event included area high school seniors interested in exploring technical education programs offered at the college.

Students gained hands-on experience in the following career technical programs: Welding, HVAC, Basic Electricity, Agricultural/Diesel, Cosmetology, Surgical Tech, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Massage Therapy, Automotive, and Computers.

More than 150 students participated in SCC’s CTE Day. The day started with a friendly “ice breaker” challenge as one student from each of the participating high schools competed in literally breaking an ice block while using just a hammer and chisel to win extra cash for their high school. Following opening comments from SCC President Dr. Tim Bellamey, students attended two morning sessions and two afternoon sessions, with each lastly approximately 45 minutes.

Overall, the event was deemed a success as SCC Dean of Instructional Services Gabriele Farner commented that she has received “nothing but positive comments” on the debut event. The students were actively engaged throughout the day and really enjoyed learning more about the technical programs in a firsthand approach.

“The idea for this day generated from input of the high school counselors. Every student is different and so are his or her career plans. The day of one-size-fits-all education is a thing of the past. As a community college, our focus should be on offering successful career tracks for all students, whether it be a less-than-one-year certificate or a two-year degree”. Gabriele Farner, SCC Dean of Instructional Services, who was the lead coordinator for the event.
