MATH 145 (Elementary Statistics)
Description
This module helps students understand the nature of the normal distribution as well as
real-life applications of the empirical rule. A calculator program will simulate sample
means and plot the values on a simple Shewhart chart. Students can choose to have the
process in-control or out-of-control and even choose among shifts of different magnitudes.
Students are then able to watch to see what kind of effect the shift has on the distribution
of sample means. The program will compute the run length (the number of samples until an
out-of-control signal is given) for each run. Students record the various run lengths and
then find the average run length (ARL) for each different shift. Empirical results are then
compared to actual results giving the students practice in real-life data analysis.
Transferability
This module will transfer to any introductory level statistics class, as well as introductory
courses in quality control or manufacturing.
