Probability, The Law of Large Numbers, and Simulation

Randy Gallaher
Lewis & Clark Community College

Course

MATH 145 (Elementary Statistics)

Description

This module will help students better understand the relationship between the relative frequency of an event and the probability of that event. It also helps students gain further understanding of the law of large numbers and simulation. Students will use the Int() and Rand() functions in Microsoft Excel (1) to simulate a large number of coin tosses, (2) to simulate a large number of rolls of a single die, and (3) to simulate a large number of rolls of a pair of dice. The relative frequencies of the possible outcomes are then compared to the actual probabilities. By the law of large numbers, the relative frequencies of the outcomes should be approximately equal to the actual probabilities.

Transferability

This module will transfer to any introductory statistics class, or any class that discusses probability.
