MATH 145 (Elementary Statistics)
Description
The BINNORM program for the TI-83 Plus graphing calculator will be used to graph binomial
distributions followed by its normal approximation for a given number of trials (n) and
a given probability of success (p) that are input by the user. The program asks the student
to enter n and p. It then returns the values np and n(1 - p).
Next, the program graphs the
histogram of the binomial distribution. The program then states the mean and standard
deviation of the normal approximation to the binomial and finally graphs the curve of
the normal approximation over the binomial histogram. The purpose is for students to discover
that as np and n(1 - p) get larger, the normal approximation gets better.
(One problem to be aware of,
of course, is that as np get larger, n(1 - p) gets smaller, and vice versa.)
Transferability
This module will transfer to any introductory statistics class or any class that discusses
binomial and normal probabilities.
