Total Area vs. Net Area

David W. Collins, Jr.
Southwestern Illinois College

Course

First semester calculus

Description

This module helps the introductory Calculus student by using a Computer Algebra System (in this case Mathematica) to see the differences in calculating the total area and net area between a curve and the x-axis over a particular interval.

Note: This entire module can also be done with any graphing calculator, without the fancy colors, if cost is a factor for those without Mathematica. See relevant sections of this module under Cost and Issues to be Aware of.

Transferability

This module will transfer to any introductory Calculus course.
