Using Riemann Sums to Calculate Area

David W. Collins, Jr.
Southwestern Illinois College

Course

First semester calculus

Description

This module helps the introductory calculus student by visually watching the areas of rectangles approximate the area under the curve, which gets closer to the actual area under the curve as the number of rectangles chosen gets larger and larger. With the appropriate software, students can edit the function, the interval, and the number of rectangles and probe the idea fully.

Transferability

This module will transfer to any introductory calculus course or any course utilizing approximation tools to determine area under a curve. This can also be utilized in a basic programming logic course as students could interpret the loop structure of the program.
