Mentor - Issues

Common Concerns of New Mentor

The following are some concerns that new mentors may share. Use the questions below as discussion starters for the mentors' forum on The Collaboratory Project web site:

  • What kinds of assistance does this particular teacher want and need?
  • How much experience does this teacher have with technology?
  • What technology resources (hardware and software) are available to the mentee?
  • Where are the resources for me to help the beginning teacher?
  • What if I don't know the answer to a question?
  • How do I get current in this area when my skills come up short?
  • Will guidelines be provided?
  • Do I need to be a computer expert to function as a mentor for this project?
  • How often might I be contacted as a mentor?
  • How much time am I expected to spend on this collaboration?
  • How do I make time for my mentoring participation?
  • What are considered "boundaries" within the mentor role?
  • In what ways should I exercise caution?
  • How do I know when to let the mentee "go?"
  • Am I able to receive CPDUs for this?
  • As a general rule, is it okay to give my opinion or should I only provide references to expert sources?
  • Will discussions between the mentor and mentee be confidential?
  • If I don't know the answer, am I expected to find the answer?
  • What is the expected turnover time from when a question is posted to when a question is answered? How do we make sure the answers are current to when the question was posted?
  • What if I am unsure of the proper response? Will I have resources to direct the new teacher?
  • What if a new teacher asks a question involving inappropriate behavior? What are my responsibilities?
