There are many state and national resources that may offer support and assistance to you and your family while you pursue Adult Education. Below you will find links to those resources, along with a short description of the types of information that they will be able to provide.

Illinois GED Testing

Illinois GED Testing is overseen by the Illinois Community College Board. This link will provide you information on eligibility for the tests, registration for the tests, how to get a copy of your transcripts and much more.

Illinois State Library Literacy Office

Since 1986, thousands of Illinois adults have improved their reading, writing, and English language skills through participation in programs funded and supported by the Illinois State Library Literacy Office. The funding provided allows agencies to offer services to Illinois adults and their families through volunteer adult literacy tutoring, family literacy, and workplace literacy programs.

Department of Children and Family Services

The goal of the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) is to provide services for abused and neglected children. The Child Protection Unit is the most important. It oversees the State Central Register (SCR) in Springfield, which maintains a 24-hour statewide hotline to report suspected abuse or neglect of a child. DCFS also provides services to foster care families, adoption and guardianship, and provides the licensing and approval for a variety of daycare situations.

Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity

The Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) promotes the development of small business and supports existing small businesses by helping existing businesses expand and remain in operation. It also helps locate sites for new businesses. The DCEO's Finance Division manages its business loan program. This department does many other things to promote trade, business, and tourism in Illinois.

Department of Employment Security

The Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) administers the state's unemployment insurance, employment service, and labor market programs. The department has 56 locations throughout the state. IDES' employment service matches the skills of job seekers with the hiring needs of Illinois employers, using Illinois Skills Match at www.illinoisskillsmatch.com.

Department of Human Services

The Department of Human Services (DHS) consolidates most of the state's human services under one umbrella.

  • They run community and state psychiatric hospitals.
  • The Division of Developmental Disabilities oversees Illinois' system of programs and services for individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • The Division of Human Capital Development helps Illinois families achieve and maintain self-sufficiency by providing a variety of support programs and services throughout the state. These programs include: the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF); food stamps; Aid to the Aged, Blind, or Disabled; child care; homeless services; Title XX social security services; general assistance; education and employment training; food pantries; and refugee and immigrant assistance.
  • The mission of the DHS Office of Rehabilitation Services is to assist disabled persons and their families in making informed choices and to promote full community participation through employment, education, and independent living opportunities.
  • The Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse administers a network of community-based alcohol and other drug treatment programs in Illinois, providing evaluations, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation to alcohol and drug abusing persons and their families. This division is also responsible for education, prevention, and treatment programs for pathological and compulsive gamblers.

Department of Labor

The Department of Labor promotes and protects the rights, wages, welfare, working conditions, safety, and health of Illinois workers through the enforcement of the state labor laws. The department also safeguards the public interest through the regulation of amusement rides, employment agencies, and counselors and nurse agencies. It also administers the Displaced Homemaker Program and reports annually on the progress of women and minorities in the workforce.

Department of Public Aid

The Illinois Department of Public Aid (IDPA) is responsible for providing healthcare coverage for adults and children who qualify for Medicaid, and for helping to ensure that children receive financial support from both parents. The Department of Public Aid administers Medicaid, Managed Care, Nursing Homes, KidCare, FamilyCare, SeniorCare, Health Benefits for Workers with Disabilities, the Supportive Living Programs, and School-Based Health Services. The Division of Child Support Enforcement offers its services to all dependent children living in Illinois. The division is responsible for enforcing child support payment obligations. This division also provides the following services:

  • Searches for the non-custodial parent.
  • Establishes paternity when the parents are not married.
  • Obtains a child support order or enforces an existing order when the non-custodial parent has been located.
  • Enforces the child support order by serving an income withholding notice for child support on the non-custodial parent's employer.
  • Serves the order on an employer in Illinois or another state.
  • Secures medical insurance for the children.
