When I was in school back in the sixties, we all thought that having a job would be better than staying in school and getting a diploma. So at the age of sixteen I left school and started to work and never thought one time about the diploma. Getting jobs was not a problem because jobs were so plentiful and the job market needed people very, very badly. A diploma did not matter. But as the years went on, the job market got soft, the jobs got harder and harder to find and when I got the job in the grocery business I thought I would retire there. But when the company closed the door it was time to get a job again. However, without a diploma or GED, no one would hire me. So I was out in the cold. Then I decided to go back to school and get a GED. I was concerned that my age would be a problem, but with the encouragement from family and friends, I went.

After I started I thought it was going to be hard and my age would be a problem. The two teachers I had, Beth and Sally, were very good and very understanding. Without the help and encouragement of the teachers and staff at HCC I think I never would have finished the course. The two teachers always had time for everyone and never were too busy to help or talk to anyone. Every time I got ready to take a test they were always there telling me to do my best. As I passed test after test, they gave me the confidence to go on.

After I got past all of my tests, I had a job offer at the college. Without the help from the school, the teacher, and family and friends, I would never have gotten my GED and would not have gotten the job. I just want to say thank you to all for the help and support to make this happen.
